Which barcode type should I pick?

Code 128 is the most flexible choice — it encodes any letters and numbers, so it's a safe default for internal labels and inventory. EAN-13 and UPC-A are the numeric retail barcodes printed on products (EAN is used worldwide, UPC mainly in North America), and EAN-8 / ITF-14 are their compact and shipping-carton variants. Code 39 is common in industrial and ID applications, while MSI, Pharmacode, and Codabar serve niche uses like warehouse shelving, pharmaceutical packaging, and libraries. The retail types have a fixed digit count and a built-in check digit that is calculated for you.

How to generate a barcode

  1. Choose a type — pick a symbology such as Code 128, EAN-13, or UPC-A to suit your use.
  2. Enter data — type the value to encode (each type has its own digit-count and format rules).
  3. Generate and download — click "Generate", then download it as a PNG.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The barcode is drawn entirely in your browser using a self-hosted library — the value you enter is never uploaded to or stored on any server. Once it's generated you can download it as a PNG image and print or embed it wherever you need.

What's different about retail barcodes like EAN and UPC?

EAN-13, EAN-8, and UPC-A are fixed-length, numbers-only barcodes used to identify retail products worldwide. You must enter the exact number of digits (for example, 13 for EAN-13), and an error is shown if the format doesn't match.

What is a check digit?

A check digit is a single calculated digit added at the end to detect errors in the barcode value. For retail types like EAN and UPC it's calculated automatically from the digits you enter, so you don't need to add it yourself.

What should I watch out for when printing a barcode?

To help scanners read it reliably, keep it large enough with adequate side margins (the quiet zone) and high contrast against the background. Stretching or shrinking it so the aspect ratio is distorted can lower the read rate.
