How is this counted?

Character count shows both the total number of characters including spaces, and the count with spaces removed. Word count is the number of chunks separated by spaces and line breaks, and paragraph count is the number of blocks separated by blank lines. Byte count is based on UTF-8 encoding — text with more non-ASCII characters (such as accented letters or symbols) can have a byte count noticeably higher than its character count.

How is the word count calculated?

It counts a chunk of characters separated by spaces and line breaks as a single word. This works well for languages like English where words are separated by spaces; for languages like Korean it counts space-separated segments, so the result may differ from the actual number of words.

Why do the counts with and without spaces differ?

The count with spaces includes every space and line break, while the count without spaces removes them. Resumes and cover letters usually ask for the count with spaces, and some forms require it without — so check the requirement of wherever you're submitting.

When would I use this?

Handy for checking the character limit on a cover letter or report, or double-checking your text fits before posting it somewhere with a limit, like a social media post or product description.
