What is image compression?
Image compression reduces file size while keeping quality as high as possible. It is often used to speed up web page loading, meet attachment size limits in email and messengers, or save storage space.
How to compress an image
- Select an image — drag the image you want to compress onto the area or click to open it.
- Adjust the quality — change the quality slider and the format (JPG or WebP) and the compressed size updates instantly.
- Download — check the savings versus the original and click ‘Download Compressed Image’.
What happens when I lower the quality?
The lower the quality, the more the file size drops, but fine detail can smear. A value of about 70–85 usually cuts size a lot while staying hard to notice, so find the right value by watching the preview and the savings.
Can PNG be compressed too?
This tool uses quality-based lossy compression, so it saves the result as JPG or WebP. If you add a PNG it is re-encoded to JPG or WebP, greatly reducing the size; choose WebP if you need a transparent background.
Can compression actually make the file larger?
A small image that is already heavily compressed may barely shrink, or rarely grow, when re-encoded. In that case it is better to lower the quality further or just use the original as-is.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Compression happens entirely inside your browser, so images are never sent to or stored on a server. You can process even sensitive photos with peace of mind.
